  • What do music therapists do?

Music therapists are trained to assess and provide treatment across all areas including emotional, communication, motor, cognitive, academic, physical, and social domains. Sessions are carefully crafted based on individual goals and interventions are designed to target specific goal areas and objectives. Music therapists continually assess, plan, evaluate, and follow-up based on progress made over time.

  • What type of certification and training do music therapists have?

Music therapists must meet strict educational requirements as set by their governing bodies. All music therapists must complete an approved college-level music therapy program and complete over 1,200 hours of supervised fieldwork. Following these accomplishments, applicants are eligible to sit for the national board exam administered by the Certification Board of Music Therapists (CBMT) to gain the MT-BC credential (Music Therapist – Board Certified). Music therapists are required to recertify every five years to stay current on best practices as they continue to provide services.
